LIVINGSTON, NJ — Just prior to the start of school on Tuesday, Livingston Superintendent of Schools Dr. Matthew Block addressed the delayed arrival of Chromebooks needed for Livingston Public Schools (LPS) students.
Although the district expected to receive and distribute an order of student devices in early July, a national shortage has delayed the delivery multiple times, according to Block, who now anticipates an arrival date as late as October.
“Due to forces beyond our control, we are still waiting for many new Chromebook devices to be delivered to the district,” he said earlier this week. “Despite the Chromebook shortage, which is a national issue, we are determined to provide devices to our students and to ensure access to the Internet for all.”
Any students who do not have Internet access at home or has a district device that is not functioning properly is urged to utilize the “Technology Help Desk” to alert the district to the issue.
After the first two days of remote learning, Block said there was a mix of comments from people who were grateful for the new "Help Desk" and from others who had trouble getting through to the technicians on hand.
“We are using the resources we have, and we're fortunate to have those resources—we just ask that people be patient," he said. "We want to make sure everybody has a working device and working Internet, so please contact us if your device is not working, where you need some assistance with having Internet provided at home.”
Despite the delay in device delivery, Block explained that the technology department has been able to provide devices to all students in grades one through 12. He further emphasized that the delay is not due to any inaction by the LPS technology department to order them in a timely fashion, but is instead the “result of an international trade issue.”
According to Block, kindergarten students in need of a device who do not currently have access to one will be given priority when district-provided Chromebooks become available.
Noting that new devices for staff members, which were ordered after the student Chromebooks, did arrive on time, Block also mentioned the possibility re-purposing staff devices for student use in the meantime.
As the academic year began, Block assured the public that the district would “continue working with families to communicate new developments and address issues that are certain to arise.”
He encouraged community members to contact LPSvirtual@livingston.org with any feedback regarding the remote learning experience.
Those struggling with technology at home can also complete the district’s new "Remote Learning Help Desk Request Form" with the required information so that a technician can reach out and provide assistance.
“So much has happened to us over the past six months,” said Block. “We cannot immediately change our current circumstances, but we are able to control how we react to them.
“With patience, partnership, communication, collaboration and perseverance, we will continue to be able to ensure that all are able to learn, create, contribute and grow. We know our students are ready to learn, and we are anxious to begin this unusual school year with that.”
More information from this week’s Livingston Board of Education meeting and the first days of school will be shared in the coming days.
