The GSA says that there now are 822 announced 5G devices, the first time that the 800-device mark has been passed. Of these, 62% — 511 devices — “are understood” to be commercially available.

The total number of devices is an 8.7% increase over last month, while the number of commercially available devices is 26.5% greater than during the last quarter.

The organization’s “5G Device Ecosystem – June 2021” found that by the end of May there were:

  • 22 form factors announced
  • 128 vendors with available or forthcoming 5G devices
  • 811 announced devices, including regional variants — but excluding operator-branded devices that essentially are rebadged versions of other phones. Of these, 511 are understood to be commercially available
  • 416 phones — 29 more than there were in April — with 350 or more of these commercially available. That’s 20 more than in the preceding month
  • 144 fixed wireless access indoor and outdoor CPE devices. Of these, 56 are now commercially available
  • 106 modules, 45 industrial/enterprise routers/gateways/modems, 38 hotspots, 15 notebooks, 16 tablets, 10 in-vehicle routers/modems/hotspots and 32 other devices. These include drones, head-mounted displays, robots, TVs, USB terminals/dongles/modems, cameras, femtocells/small cells, repeaters, vehicle OBUs, a snap-on dongle/adapter, a switch, a vending machine and an encoder.

“Against a backdrop of the global pandemic and economic disruption, the pace of 5G deployment and commercialization has continued unabated,” commented Joe Barrett, President, Global mobile Suppliers Association about the 5G device commercial availability research. “The mobile industry has continued to see more spectrum allocated to 5G, more networks deployed and, as of today, the number of commercially available 5G devices break[s] through the totemic 500 barrier for the first time.”

In March, 5G Americas found that the number of 5G subscribers had jumped 385.5 million between the fourth quarters of 2019 and 2020, which was three times the adoption rate of 4G. Omdia did the research on behalf of the trade group.
