SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A skimming device was found Tuesday on the walkup ATM machine at Bank of America on Lake Tahoe Blvd. Detectives from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to the South Lake Tahoe branch after being notified by the bank manager that an ATM service technician found the devise. The device had been place on the ATM within the past two weeks.
SLTPD is encouraging all customers who may have used the ATM over the holiday weekend to check for any fraudulent activity on their bank accounts. If any fraudulent activity is discovered, people are encouraged to contact Bank of America immediately or contact the South Lake Tahoe Police Department and make a report. Other local banks were notified and asked to check their own ATM machines for possible skimming devices.
Skimming devices are small cards placed inside the card reader or covers placed over the card readers, most commonly found on ATM machines and gas pumps. These devices collect the credit/debit card information and can be transmitted to a receiver or recorded on the device to be collected later and used to commit fraud.
This investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information is asked to call the South Lake Tahoe Police Department at 530-542-6100.
