The first Pedego Electric Bikes retailer in Pennsylvania has opened in Harrisburg. Pedego Harrisburg opened the new shop at Strawberry Square at 17 N. Third St. in Harrisburg across from the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts and adjacent to the Third Street entrance to Strawberry Square near Rite Aid. Bike enthusiast and CEO of Harristown, the owner of Strawberry Square, Brad Jones was on hand on Thursday with other officials to welcome the new bike store to the capital city.

“This is the only one in Pennsylvania and what better place to have it than the city of Harrisburg,” he said.

The new shop, which has one of the city’s bicycle lanes right in front of the store, sells Pedego bicycles and services them as well and is also offering guided tours, rentals and free trial rides. Bike rentals begin at $25 an hour. The store also sells bicycle accessories.

“We’ve been excited about looking and doing electric bikes for about a year and looking for the right place and we certainly found it here,” co-owner Michael Soisson said.

Bike sales across the country have reportedly surged during the pandemic as many people have found things to do in their own area as opposed to traveling.

“We’ve been open for about three weeks,” Michael Soisson said. “Its been a fantastic journey already. We’re way ahead of what we expected in terms of sales and rentals, just people coming in and being interested.”

The bikes are equipped with 250 to 500-watt motors, which the company says allow riders to conquer hills and cycle distances up to 60 miles on a single battery charge. The twist-and-go throttle gives riders instant manual control over their speeds while the pedal assist functionality automatically adds power to their pedaling, the company said.

Michael Soisson, said as a traditional cyclist he never thought he would switch over to electric bicycles but said that electric bicycles are fantastic for people of all ages.

“I never thought I would go to electric but it is unbelievable --you can pedal as little or as much as you want,” he said. “It gives you all kinds of flexibility. If you got a hill to climb and you need a little assistance you get that.”

Pedego’s models include cruisers, mountain bikes, cargo bikes and electric folding bikes among other bikes.

The dealership, which opened Sept. 1 is owned by Michael, Denise and Drew Soisson.

The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Pedego Electric Bikes was founded in California in 2008 and has more than 125 Pedego branded stores in the United States and additional branded Pedego locations in Canada, France and the United Kingdom.

“Electric bikes across the country are on the rise and we just thought it would be a good thing for the city and for the people,” co-owner and manager Drew Soisson of Harrisburg said. “It’s a good area with the bike lanes … it is a good opportunity for everybody.”
