Twice in five days, Arapahoe County's bomb squad retrieved suspicious devices from locations in Englewood just 11 blocks apart. One of those two devices was an active explosive device, police say.

A passerby spotted a suspicious device appearing to be a pipe bomb in the field beside Colorado's Finest High School of Choice around 4 p.m. on Jan. 16, according to a news release from Englewood Police. The school is at Chenango Avenue and Acoma Street.

After establishing a perimeter, Englewood officers called in Arapahoe County's bomb squad, which retrieved the device for further testing, which later revealed the device was an active explosive.

“The investigation into who placed the device in the field is on ongoing,” the news release reads in part. “No further information is available at this time.”

The school's security and facilities staff will increase their inspections of school grounds for the foreseeable future, Englewood Schools Superintendent Wendy Rubin said in a statement.

Five days later, a woman walking her dog spotted a man leaving a suspicious device at Rotolo Park at Huron Street and Radcliff Avenue about 2:40 p.m. on Jan. 20.

Again, Englewood officers established a perimeter and called in the bomb squad, which retrieved the device for further testing. The device had been placed near the fence at the north end of the park next to the playground.

The response shut down the park and Huron Street for about an hour.

The device at Rotolo Park was cylindrical and covered in black tape, but did not strongly resemble the device left at Colorado's Finest, said Englewood Police spokesperson Scot Allen. The device was later determined to be nonexplosive.

The man who left the device at Rotolo Park was described as a white male with red hair and a short beard, wearing a black stocking cap, jeans and a heavy coat, Allen said.

The two incidents do not appear to be related, he said.

“Both of these are active investigations and the Police Department is working diligently on them,” Allen said in an email. “If someone sees an item that is suspicious or looks like a bomb, please leave the area and call the Police Department. Do not touch it or get close to it.”

Anyone with information on either incident is urged to call Englewood Police at 303-761-7410.
