TRINIDAD, Colo. (KKTV) - An arrest has been made after two explosive devices were planted in public areas in Trinidad, including one that seriously injured a 20-year-old man.
Police announced Monday night that Jonathon Armijo, of Trinidad, had been booked in the Las Animas County Jail on two counts of attempted first-degree murder and two counts of possession/use of an explosive device.
Armijo’s arrest came less than a day after a device left in an apartment complex parking lot exploded. Police tell 11 News victim Diego Hurtado was with a friend at the Trinidad Apartments on the north side of the city around 1 a.m. Monday when the pair spotted a package lying in an empty parking space.
“[The victim] picked up the package and walked with it. [The victim] then opened the package and there was an explosion,” police wrote in a news release.
Hurtado was seriously injured in the blast and was rushed to a local hospital before being airlifted to another medical center in the state. The man with Hurtado was not hurt.
Several people told 11 News reporter Nicole Heins that the box had “Mommy and Daddy’s wedding rings” written on it. Police have not confirmed that information.
Trinidad police say a similar incident was reported Feb. 5 involving an explosive found in the Walmart parking lot. Investigators have not said whether anyone was hurt and have declined to elaborate further on the incident at this time.
Armijo has been tied to both cases. Police said Monday night they were questioning a second person of interest.
“At this time, it is believed there is no danger to the public,” police added in a news release.
The incident is being investigated by the Trinidad Police Department, Pueblo Metro Bomb Squad, and the ATF. Anyone with information on the incident is urged to call TPD at 719-846-4441, ATF at 1-888-ATF-BOMB, or email ATFTips@atf.gov.
