A proposal from Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto would require the city to incorporate electric vehicle charging plans into projects to renovate or build city facilities.
Under the Electric Vehicle Readiness Ordinance, new and renovated city-owned facilities would have electrical capacity and equipment installed to support the city’s fleet of electric vehicles and to encourage the public to charge their electric vehicles on city property.
A task force would decide on installing DC Fast Charging stations to meet the city’s needs and ensure that all upgrades to city facilities incorporate make-ready infrastructure to accommodate electric vehicle chargers.
“Providing electric vehicle charging stations at city facilities, and with partners citywide, will allow our residents to join us in improving our air quality and reducing emissions,” Peduto said.
This would be Pittsburgh’s latest measure intended to address climate change and improve air quality in the city. A strategic plan adopted last year aims to add more than 200 new public charging plugs on city property — plus more than 2,000 total across the city — by 2025. City officials also have established a goal of operating a fossil fuel-free fleet of vehicles by 2030.
Pittsburgh operates the largest electric vehicle fleet in Western Pennsylvania with 26 electric vehicles and has plans to add 36 more. The city aims to convert pickups, vans and refuse trucks to electric beginning next year.
The proposal is expected to be introduced to City Council on Tuesday.
