Suffolk arson detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding an unspecified device that detonated and formed a crater on Fox Island Sunday morning.
Police say they received multiple calls from surrounding towns about a loud noise at around 11 a.m.
They say the crater left by the incident is about 4 feet wide and 2 feet deep. According to police, “the crater appears to have been created when the device was detonated. There were no injuries reported.”

Arson Section detectives are asking for the public’s help to identify and locate the operator of a vessel seen leaving the area at the time of the detonation. The boat is described as having stripes.
Anyone with information is urged to call the Arson Section at 631-852-6024 or leave anonymous tip at Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
