Scientists at The University of Texas at Arlington have developed a new noninvasive technology that can monitor blood in patients with COVID-19, diabetes or certain blood disorders.

Developed in partnership with Shani Biotechnologies in Austin, the device works particularly well in Black patients and could help reduce racial disparities in health care, scientists say.

So far, the UTA team has evaluated the technology in more than 30 patients by comparing hemoglobin values measured by the device and in standard blood tests, said George Alexandrakis, bioengineering associate professor at UTA.

Preliminary results suggest the device can estimate hemoglobin with better accuracy and consistency than other comparable methods. This technology uses properties of hemoglobin in the blue-green light spectra, as opposed to the red-infrared spectra used in other devices.

Most methods for monitoring hemoglobin require blood samples and expensive equipment, Alexandrakis said. The technology could be embedded in a wearable device, such as a watch or a monitor, “that would read the blood through the skin,” he said.

The technology could monitor blood sugar in patients with diabetes and hemoglobin in COVID-19 patients. Scientists have found a link between severe cases of COVID-19 and low hemoglobin.

Available noninvasive methods are often inaccurate in people of color because of differences in skin melanin.

“The technology has massive potential in health care settings, remote monitoring and embodiment into wearables,” Dr. Vinoop Daggubati, CEO of Shani Biotechnologies, said in a press release. “We are committed to closing the racial disparity ... to provide better care for African Americans, Hispanics and people of color.”

The team plans to conduct follow-up studies at Arlington hospitals.
