THERMALITO — Thermalito Union Elementary School District has received six electric buses, according to Cody Walker, assistant superintendent for Thermalito Union Elementary School District.
Walker said that the buses were delivered before Jan. 1 over the Christmas break.
“They really meet our day to day transportation needs in a way that we’re pretty excited about,” he said.
The school district had approved the purchase of the six GreenPower Battery Electric Automotive School Transportation buses in 2020.
The Butte County Air Quality Management District had funded the purchase of one electric school bus through its clean vehicle incentive program. The program offers grants to help in the reduction of emissions and the impact of air quality. The other five electric school buses will be funded through the California Clean Energy Jobs Act Proposition 39.
Walker said that the school district is just waiting on the installation of the last part of the charging system from PG&E which was delayed because of the weather. The installation is anticipated to happen on Jan. 15. He said that the Thermalito Union Elementary School District is hoping to be able to start using the new electric buses at the beginning of February or before then.
According to a GreenPower Motor Company press release, the buses are purpose-built, all-electric, 40-foot, Type D school buses. They have a range of up to 150 miles and a 194.5-kWh battery pack.
The press release said that these school buses can charge up to 19 kW on a standard J1772 protocol. They can also DC fast charge with additional standard features like air ride suspension, pass through storage and air disk brakes.
“This delivery to Thermalito UESD is our largest school bus delivery to date, made possible by the focused efforts of our production and sales teams.” Ryne Shetterly, vice president of sales and marketing at GreenPower, said in a press release.
