The three best-selling vehicles in America are all full-size trucks. So, if America’s automakers hope to go all-electric (and they do), they’ll need to convince truck buyers that electric pickups can be every bit as practical, powerful, and fun as the full-size trucks they’re used to.
Third of The Big Three
Ford was the first of America’s Big Three to show off a battery-only pickup, revealing its F-150 Lightning last May. Chevrolet followed last month with an all-electric version of its best-selling Silverado.
Ram will be the last of the Big Three truckmakers to go electric. It doesn’t plan to launch its EV pickup until 2024. Being third has obvious disadvantages. But it has the advantage of seeing what its rivals will offer before going public with its own design.
Ram will milk that play for all the advantage it can get. Parent company Stellantis showed off the first all-electric Jeep this week and announced plans for more electric vehicles (EVs). But it wasn’t willing to show its hand at the electric truck table.
Instead, Ram has released two heavily-shadowed digital renderings.
Sportier Than Current Rams
One shows the truck from its front angle. It’s sleeker than the Ram 1500 the company currently builds. Dog-bone LED headlights pinch in toward a huge RAM logo backlight in red. The hood has what looks like a power bulge, but it likely covers a front trunk, as all the bits that make an EV go fit underneath the truck’s floor. The greenhouse is long and sleek, looking more sporty than bulky.
A rear angle looks a bit more conventional, though it’s heavily shadowed as well. Big dogleg LED taillights from another backlit red RAM logo. The fenders may be flared out a bit more than current Ram designs.
That’s nearly all we get for now. Ram has trademarked the name “Ram Revolution,” which may hint at the trucks’ name or a marketing campaign. It rides on Stellantis’s new STLA frame platform. The automaker claims the platform is capable of up to 500 miles of driving range. But we’re a long way from the day the EPA can test that claim.
Both the Silverado EV and the F-150 Lightning come in basic work truck editions for around $40,000 and in more luxurious trims that can push close to six figures. Ram will likely follow suit. We’ll bring more information as we get it.
