(May 30, 2022) After receiving six months of savings this winter compared to National Grid’s prices, island participants in Nantucket PowerChoice electricity plan will see continued savings on their electric bills this summer.

The Nantucket PowerChoice rate of 11.065 cents/ kWh remains lower than National Grid’s new residential Basic Service price of 11.491 cents/kWh, which goes into effect this month through the end of October.

Nantucket PowerChoice was launched in 2017 as a town-vetted alternative to National Grid’s fluctuating seasonal rates and to other private electricity supply offers in the marketplace.

Since its launch, Nantucket PowerChoice has provided a total of $9.3 million in savings to electricity customers on Nantucket. In addition, Nantucket PowerChoice directly funds the town’s Local Solar Rebate Program, which helps to increase the island’s energy independence by providing rebates – up to $6,000 – for solar projects installed on year-round residential properties.

Increasing the amount of locally-generated solar energy also helps reduce the island’s demand for electricity from the grid on expensive, hot summer days, which can in turn reduce electricity prices for everyone.

To date, Nantucket PowerChoice and the Local Solar Rebate Program have supported the development of 70 new solar projects on the island, with more on the way.

Nantucket PowerChoice supply rates are available to both residential and commercial electricity customers.

Through the program, participants receive a long-term, fixed price for the supply services part of their electricity bills and protection from National Grid’s changing Basic Service prices, which can rise in winter. Program participants remain National Grid customers for their electricity delivery, and National Grid continues to handle billing.

More information about Nantucket PowerChoice is available at NantucketPower.org. Information about the Nantucket Local Solar Rebate Program is available at Nantucket-ma.gov/Solar-Rebate.

Questions about Nantucket PowerChoice, the town’s Local Solar Rebate, and other municipal energy initiatives can be directed to energy coordinator Lauren Sinatra at LSinatra@nantucket-ma.gov.
