The BMW Group’s stated goal is that EVs will make up 50% of its global sales by 2030, and it took a step toward that target with the debut of the new all-electric eDrive35. The newest model joins the existing i4 eDrive40 and the i4 M50 as a lower-priced alternative.
The eDrive35 will be offered with the same standard features and options as the eDrive40. The difference between the two models is entirely in the batteries and driveline.
Both models use a single electric motor driving the rear wheels, but where the eDrive40 offers 335 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, the eDrive35 will deliver 281 hp and 295 lb-ft. The difference in 0-60 acceleration is about 0.3 seconds, with the eDrive40 making the dash in 5.5 seconds, versus 5.8 for the eDrive35.
Battery differences
Net energy capacity of the battery pack in the eDrive35 is 66 kWh, compared to 81.5 kWh in the eDrive40. On a full charge, the eDrive40 has a maximum range of 301 miles when equipped with 18-inch wheels, or 282 miles if the 19-inch wheel option is selected. BMW expects a range of about 260 miles for the eDrive35 on 18-inch wheels.
When it comes time to recharge, the eDrive40 can accept up to 200kW of DC fast charging, while the eDrive35 accepts up to 180 kW. Based on BMW’s development testing, eDrive35 owners can expect to charge from 10% to 80% in about 32 minutes at DC fast charging stations capable of delivering the full 180 kW.
Like the eDrive40, the new eDrive35 features BMW’s dramatic Curved Display, comprising a 12.3-inch driver information screen with a 14-9-inch infotainment control screen, both encased behind a single glass fixture stretching across the dashboard.
The i4 eDrive35 will have access to the full range of available BMW ConnectedDrive digital services and over-the-air updates, as on the more expensive models.
The bottom line
BMW announced the i4 eDrive35 will start at $52,395 including all applicable fees. The eDrive40 currently retails for $56,895, while the top i4 M50 is priced at $68,295.
The 2023 BMW i4 eDrive35 will begin production in the fourth quarter of 2022, and the first examples are scheduled to arrive at American dealers in the first quarter of 2023.
In the first half of 2022, BMW sold more than 57,000 fully electric vehicles worldwide. The BMW Group is aiming for BEVs to account for fully 50% of global sales by 2030.
