Angel Island ferry to go all electric, a first for California - San Francisco Chronicle

The Angel Island ferry, which shuttles passengers between Tiburon and the largest natural island in San Francisco Bay, will be fully electric by 2024, making it the first zero-emission, electric propulsion passenger vessel in California.

“We are very excited that The Angel Island will be the first of the short-run ferries in California to be 100% zero-emission, as our company continues supporting the natural environment of the Bay and our beautiful state park," Capt. Maggie McDonogh of the Angel Island Ferry Co., the ferry’s fourth-generation owner and operator, said in a news release.

The 59-foot, 400-passenger vessel will be converted with the help of Pacific Gas and Electric Co. and California electric marine company Green Yachts. PG&E will bolster electricity transmission to the ferry and install charging infrastructure, while Green Yachts will convert the boat itself.

Getting sufficient electricity to the terminal is key to the electrification plan, McDonogh said, thanking PG&E for its support through its EV Fleet Program. The ferry project is the program’s first use in the maritime industry, according to the utility.

A vessel like the Angel Island ferry requires 15 times the energy to travel one mile that a fully electric semi-truck would, according to Graham Balch, managing broker of Green Yachts.

“This electrification project wouldn't be possible without sufficient electrical supply for fast charging between ferry runs,” Balch said in a news release. “The increased energy requirement per mile shows the significant challenge associated with electrifying the marine sector.”

But the California Air Resources Board will require both new and in-use short-run ferries operating in California waters to become zero-emissions by the end of 2025. Among all commercial harbor vessels, ferries are one of the largest emitters of PM 2.5, a tiny yet damaging pollutant, according to CARB.

“Although they only represent 2 percent of the harbor craft population, (ferries) emit 11 percent of total commercial harbor craft PM2.5 emissions,” CARB’s website says.

Statewide, 16 short-run ferries are in operation, six of which are in the Bay Area.

The electrification of the Angel Island ferry marks an important step in meeting the state’s greenhouse gas reduction and other climate goals, said Aaron August, PG&E’s vice president of utility partnerships and innovation.

“The electrification of The Angel Island vessel aligns with our core focus of proactively preparing the grid for the future, increasing access to charging infrastructure, and supporting electric transportation adoption through rates, rebates, tools, and education," August said in a news release.
