Homeless veteran in need of help, seeks new I.D. and electric wheelchair - KMPH Fox 26

Homeless veteran Arlen Martens is happy to be off the streets.

For the past month, he’s been sleeping in a warm bed at Turning Point of Central California, which offers short-term housing for the homeless.

Martens came to Fresno eight years ago.

Living on the streets, he let his identification card expire.

“I have to have that because my whole life is upside down because I don’t have that birth certificate cause I’m from out of state,” he said.

Martens was born in Nebraska and has had no luck getting his birth certificate.

That piece of paper would help him get his new I.D., social security card, and access to his bank account.

“I feel like I’m an out of towner but I’m really like kicking a can by myself. It gets discouraging,” said Martens.

Before learning about his identification nightmare, our mission was to find him an electric wheelchair.

“A wheelchair is not the most important thing, but an electric chair would help me now that I’ve lost half of this foot,” he said. “I gotta be careful because If I jam it I can get more infection again.”

Martens says he spent 32 years serving his county in the Army.

He says his current wheelchair limits what he can do and where he can go.
