Let's start by addressing the elephant in the room. Yes, we're aware "eBussy" is uncomfortably similar to a certain vulgar slang term. No, we won't tell you what it is or what it means (but you're welcome to google it, if you dare). With that out of the way, we can now proceed without making the name the butt of any more jokes.
So what is eBussy? It's a range of versatile electric vans from a German startup company called Electric Brands. The EV platform is modular, with 10 different body styles available, and the vehicle's design is heavily inspired by the Volkswagen Microbus with a hint of Honda E thrown in. The company claims the eBussy's bodies can be swapped "in just a few simple steps," turning your electric passenger van into a pickup, panel van, camper, open-top surf van, or off-road-ready overlander.
The eBussy platform utilizes a permanent e-AWD setup with four electric motors that provide a combined 738 lb-ft of torque. Battery capacity ranges from 10-30 kWh, but even with the base battery the eBussy promises 124 miles of range thanks to solar panels and energy recuperation systems. The eBussy will also rely on an ambitious battery pack exchange program, in which customers can swap out depleted batteries for fully charged ones at battery exchange stations around Europe.
Exact details on how a customer can swap bodies on their eBussy have not yet been revealed, but the base bus configuration is expected to start at €19,600 (roughly $23,000 at current exchange rates), all the way up to €28,800 ($33,700) for the off-road camper variant. Electric Brands says the eBussy line will launch in Europe in 2021. If true, that would beat Volkswagen's own ID Buzz retro EV van to market by a whole year.
