After months of waiting, Microsoft finally launched its Surface laptops in India a few months ago. At the time of launch, the company announced the arrival of the Surface Laptop 3, Surface Pro 7 and the Surface Pro X in India. The three laptops are positioned as propositions that offer not only very different specifications and features but also a very different experience.
Of the three, we have the Surface Laptop 3 with us today. This 13.5-inch screen device promises fast performance, premium design, a touch screen experience all married to a pure Windows experience. Read our review to find out if it's the laptop for you.
Microsoft Surface Laptop 3: Design and display
The Surface Laptop 3 is available in two display, 13.5-inches, and 15 inches. Of the two, Microsoft sent us the former for review. In our time with the laptop, we found it to be a well-crafted piece of machinery. At around 1300 grams, the Laptop 3 from Microsoft is lightweight, and carved out of metal feels solid to hold in the hand.
Microsoft has kept things very simple with the laptop, as there's only a simple Windows logo on the upper end of the chassis, with the rest of the frame left entirely blemish-free. The Laptop 3 is also quite thin and feels like a premium piece of machinery the moment you hold, or for the matter lay your eyes on it.
When the lid is opened, the Surface Laptop 3 impresses more with its design as the device uses a plush fabric to fill up the spaces around the keyboard and the expansive trackpad. This gives the device a rather classy look, which not only feels premium but also makes using the device more convenient.
Much like the previous Surface Laptops launched by Microsoft, the Laptop 3's is machined completely out of metal which would remind you a little of the MacBook Air. While this comparison may not be too favourable for the company, the consequence of it is. This is because like the MacBook Air series, the Surface Laptop 3 also features a sleek, minimalistic design that looks quite pleasing to the eye. The use of metal and the high level of craftsmanship in machining the device also makes the laptop feel quite durable in terms of build quality.
Moving on to the display, the Surface Laptop 3 again impresses with its quality. The laptop features a 13.5-inch, 2256 x 1540-resolution panel that is vibrant and brighter than most panels you'd find on a laptop. It is a touch-screen panel, that's very responsive to the touch and has nice viewing angles also. In terms of performance, it is one of the crispest panels we've used to date on a laptop. The text looks sharp and movies, pictures, and other videos look very detailed on it.
However, if we are nitpicking, we would have definitely preferred a panel with much smaller bezels around it. While the panel itself does all that it can to immerse you in the content that's playing on it, the chunky bezels around it do take you away from a little from it. But overall, the display is one of the better ones that you can get on a laptop right now, and in our time with the laptop, it definitely emerged as something that impressed us.
Microsoft Surface Laptop 3: Performance, specifications and battery
But before we get to the hardware and performance of the device, we would also like to talk a little about the keyboard and trackpad of the laptop. With the Laptop 3, Microsoft has done a very good job, as both the keyboard and trackpad work as flawless as they look. The key feedback is good, which helps improve the typing experience on the device. Add to that the fact that the laptop also offers a plush fabric to cover the adjoining areas, and you possibly have one of the best devices available in the market if you do a lot of typing on the device.
Underneath the hood, the Laptop 3 offers a 10th Generation Core i5 chip with in-built Iris Graphics from Intel. This has been paired to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. While we didn't stress test it or run benchmarks on the device, we did, however, put it through the daily grind of handling productivity tasks, and casual gaming.
As expected, the Laptop 3 fared quite well in dealing with general productivity tasks, with the device also handling browsing the internet and watching movies without breaking a sweat. However, when it comes to gaming, Surface Laptop 3's limits can easily be tested. This is because the onboard GPU isn't one of the most powerful ones out there.
But while it cannot beat laptops with discreet GPUs, it can still hold its own when dealing with casual gaming needs. With its limited graphics processing cores, the Iris Plus GPU provides superior performance to older generation onboard graphics solution from Intel and is good enough to run games such as Fifa 20 on medium-high graphics and above 1080p resolutions without seeing a significant drop-off in frame rate.
Yet, we won't recommend the Surface Laptop 3 if you are looking to play demanding AAA titles on the device. The Laptop 3 is no match for a gaming laptop, and as such is only good enough if you're looking for a laptop to run basic games, or maybe demanding games but at low-medium graphics settings with maybe textures and anti-aliasing levels turned down.
In terms of battery, Laptop 3 is one of the best in the business. It is right up there with the best ultrabooks out there as Microsoft's offering provides close to 8-9 of use on a single charge. However, much like other laptops, the battery life majorly depends on how the device is being used, with gaming and consumption of multimedia draining the battery o the Surface Laptop 3 quite quickly.
Microsoft Surface Laptop 3: Should you buy it?
The Surface Laptop 3 with its design, hardware, and overall performance, doesn't attempt to do anything special. In fact, there's no attempt to even do so. What it does instead provides an extremely refined experience on a device that looks and feels as premium as anything else available in the market right now.
While this ensures that the Laptop 3 doesn't provide anything, in particular, to make itself stand out from the crowd, however, Microsoft's focus on providing a premium experience with the device, makes it stand out as a no non-sense laptop which you can simply pick up without putting in much though if you are in the segment for a laptop for getting you through work and the occasional binge-watching sessions. The only sticking point here could be the device's price.
Starting at Rs 1,01,990 for the 128GB storage variant, and going up to Rs 1,27,990 for the 256GB one, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 does not come cheap. In fact, it is a bit on the expensive side, with competing players such as Asus and Dell offering a few devices that promise similar specs, and a more interesting feature set at a more aggressive price point. But then again, that's the premium one pays for class, and that's something which the Surface Laptop 3 offers that many of its competitors don't.
