MILWAUKEE — A pair of Wisconsin men invented a new device to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
The two created a device that allows you to have hand sanitizer at your fingertips. What started as just an idea back in March, has now come full circle for a Wisconsin doctor and his business partner.
Dr. Boaz Avitall is a cardiologist at a hospital in Chicago but lives in Milwaukee. He says the idea for the device came to him during his commute to the hospital while COVID-19 was first surging.
“I was driving back and forth and I visited a ton of gas stations and stuff and every time I grabbed the handle at the gas station it always went through my mind, who else grabbed it and what am I going to do,” Avitall says.
Avitall says he began trying to make a prototype for what's now known as the Wrist Dispenser using an IV bag and some velcro while at work.
“I put velcro on it and I had it on my arm like that,” Dr. Avitall says.
Now if you fast forward about seven months, you will see their finished product. The team says it took about 200 prototypes and a lot of hard work to develop something that worked how they wanted it to.
“You can press the bladder and there it is and it’s always there,” Wrist Dispenser Vice President, Patrick Santini says.
The device is a wristband with a pouch inside. The pouch is refillable and it holds three days worth of hand sanitizer. The idea behind the product is to always have it available at your fingertips.
“It’s really a wonderful feeling to be able to be a part of a solution. This COVID virus is a really big challenge. It's all around us and it’s all over the place,” Santini says. “We are all looking for that one thing that makes us safe and we have come to the realization that it’s not one thing it’s a lay or things.”
The product is made here in Wisconsin and uses a few local Milwaukee businesses to help produce and piece together their invention. It’s a local product they hope to sell to customers across the U.S.
“It’s creating a product that hopefully will keep the population safer than where they are today,” Dr. Avitall says.
They believe using the simplicity and necessity of such an item is what is key. The Wrist Dispenser can come in hundreds of colors and patterns for anyone to use.
