The first installation of a town-owned and operated electric vehicle charging station was recently completed at 625 Pierce Street in Erie.

While not yet activated, more stations are coming soon with the town’s goal of offering 25 stations by 2025.

By installing 25 stations, the town will be able to achieve its goal of the Sustainability Master Plan of encouraging and increasing the use of EVs, according to Erie Sustainability and Water Conservation Specialist, Tyler Kesler.

“The town is excited to begin utilizing the new EV as well as offer these new charging stations throughout the town for public use,” said Communications and Marketing Manager, Amber Luttrell, in an email.

Last year, Erie received a Regional Air Quality Grant for $71,260 in Dec. to purchase seven Level II Dual-port charging stations and replace one combustion engine fleet with an electric vehicle, according to Luttrell.

Luttrell said this grant will help further the town’s vision to become a leader in sustainability by providing outreach and engaging the community while protecting the environment.

“EVs present a significant opportunity to improve air quality and reduce the environmental impact of transportation activities in the community,” read the Sustainability Master Plan Transportation Sector Priorities and Strategies. “An all-electric vehicle uses no gasoline and is powered only by its battery, which must be periodically recharged.”

The Transportation Sector Priorities and Strategies also stated electricity is less expensive than petroleum and using it to power a vehicle does not produce tailpipe emissions.

Eight plug-ins/parking spots are slated for the Erie Community Center with four more more west of Town Hall and two curbside a block off of Old Town Briggs Street, according to Luttrell. The Board of Trustees is scheduled to review implementation details mid-November of this year.

All EV charging stations will be featured on ChargePoint’s locator smartphone application as well as on Erie’s website when activated by Jan. 2021.

“Stations will provide residents with the opportunity to charge their vehicles throughout the town at a reasonable cost and for visitors, the opportunity to do the same while visiting our great local businesses,” said Luttrell in an email.
