“It allows us to access the brain whenever we want. We can register and stream live the signal that comes from the brain during certain conditions. That will help research as we will be able to assess patients in many different conditions and try to understand how the brain changes during these different conditions.”

Being able to monitor brain activity on an ongoing basis will further doctors’ understanding of how the brain works. And it will greatly benefit patients.

We apologize, but this video has failed to load.

As the device can record brain activity for months (versus brief in-person doctor/patient interactions), “we are able to see what’s going on all the time, and have an objective way to understand how the patient is doing.”

What’s learned from the Percept and the data it provides will take neurologists a step closer to the next generation of stimulators, “which are closed loop, or adaptive stimulators.”

In current DBS, the brain receives constant stimulation.

“It’s the same all the time and doesn’t change, but every disease changes from moment to moment, and it’s known that the best way to stimulate the brain is to stimulate only when needed and at a particular strength —  and no stimulation at other times to avoid side effects.

“To do this you need a signal, a biomarker that can be used to control the stimulation, and we’re learning these biomarkers through a device like Percept.”

Fasano has high hopes for devices like Percept in the treatment of epilepsy.

“From inside the brain, we’ll be able to see what happens during a seizure, or the day before the seizure, and that will be ideal for closed loop stimulation, which will turn on only when the seizure is about to start. We will be able to record seizure activity for months, not just during the hour or two hours during an EEG in hospital.”
