Thousands without power, electric wires spark as Christmas storm slams tri-state area - WPIX 11 New York

NEW YORK — Wicked weather struck the tri-state on Christmas Eve into Christmas Day, causing power outages, fallen trees and damage.

Heavy downpours, strong wind speeds throughout in neighborhoods across the five boroughs as residents tried to ring in the holiday.

Instead, several of them captured flames coming from electrical wires in the area.

Firefighters scattered throughout the hardest-hit spots, putting out any active fires as electric companies also try to combat vicious winds to restore power to thousands of customers throughout New York and New Jersey.

New York outages:

As of 5:15 a.m., Con Edison reported more than 8,000 customers without power across the five boroughs. Staten Island reported the most outages, with over 3,500 customers in the dark this Christmas morning.

In Westchester County, Con Edison reported about 11,400 customers powerless as of 5:15 a.m.

As of 5:21 a.m, PSEG Long Island reported 9,908 customers out of power.

Orange & Rockland reported another 24,640 customers without power as of 5:10 a.m.

New Jersey outages:

As of 5:15 a.m., PSE&G reported 24,762 customers were affected by power outages caused by the storm.

Jersey City Power & Light (JCPL) reported 36,239 customers were without power, the more than 20,000 customers affected in Monmouth County.

Watches, warnings & advisories
High Wind Warnings have been issued as gusts could approach 65 mph along coastal sections. That could bring down tree limbs and cause power outages.

Flood Watches are also in effect as the heavy downpours, coupled with a melting snowpack, will cause flooding. Along the coast, a strong southerly flow will pile up the water along the shoreline causing minor flooding at high tide. For this reason, a Coastal Flood Advisory has been issued for the high tide cycle overnight.

Any loose items should be secured as it may get blow away by the wind.

Most of the heavy downpours should be east of the city by daybreak, but the showers linger into Christmas morning. It will still be windy as well, but at least it will start to back down a bit. During the afternoon, there could be a few breaks of sun.
