Chinese electric car maker Kandi is moving its U.S. headquarters from Garland to a high-profile intersection in Dallas along U.S. Highway 75.

Kandi America, the U.S. subsidiary of Kandi Technologies Group Inc., said Monday that it expects to move into the former Academy Sports location at 8050 Forest Lane in April. It closed on the building purchase last week.

The 54,372-square-foot building will house Kandi America’s corporate offices, a showroom and a distribution center for its electric vehicles. It also will allow the company to create a dedicated area for test drives.

“This relocation comes at an exciting time as Kandi doubles down on its investment in the U.S.,” said Kandi America CEO Johnny Tai in a statement. “This move is both a strategic and logical next step in our growth strategy.”

That strategy includes rolling out electric and off-road vehicles to U.S. buyers.

Kandi America arrived in North Texas last summer, opening its first U.S. sales facility in Garland. The company, known as a battery maker in China before expanding into auto manufacturing, laid the groundwork for its U.S. entry in 2018 when it bought ATV distributor SC Autosports.

Kandi is targeting the low end of the electric auto market, hoping to appeal to budget-conscious buyers who want to move away from fossil fuel vehicles. Kandi’s models are priced from $17,499 to $27,499.

Chinese automakers have yet to make a significant mark in the U.S., although the Asian country has invested heavily in electric vehicles and subsidies to try to grow the emerging market.

In the company’s most recent regulatory filing, Kandi said it originally planned to export 2,000 to 5,000 electric vehicles to the U.S. last year, but had to adjust those plans because of the COVID-19 pandemic and clearance reviews by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Kandi said in November that it received EPA clearance to sell two EV vehicles and was modifying features and upgrading software to cater to American customers. It had not sold any vehicles in the U.S. at that point.
