TO THE EDITOR:
The new mail truck is supposed to be able to be fitted with either an internal combustion engine or a battery-electric powertrain. ("Next-gen trucks bring USPS into 20th century," March 1). If Oshkosh Defense has sense, they will produce them with the electrified powertrain. Either that or wait for President Biden to void their contract.
Electric vehicles make more sense as delivery vehicles because of the fact that they make multiple stops during the day. They use regenerative braking to put energy back into the battery, so range anxiety isn't a problem. All you have to do is invest in the charging infrastructure instead of running to the gas station, which will be cheaper in the long run. Although we all know government has a problem with infrastructure.
Every day, an AM General mail truck goes up my street. It needs a muffler, badly, and it spews exhaust. If all the mail trucks were converted to electricity, think how much cleaner the air would be.
