NORTH CAROLINA — The FDA has approved the first prescreening device that may detect if you have COVID-19.

What You Need To Know

  • The FDA has authorized the first machine learning-based screening device that can identify certain biomarkers that may indicate a COVID-19 infection

  • The COVID Plus Monitor was created by Tiger Tech Solutions

  • The creators are Harrison Wittels and Rick Whittington. Whittington lives in Holly Springs, N.C.

It's called the COVID Plus Monitor and was designed by Tiger Tech Solutions.

The armband is strapped to your upper arm. Once it's turned on, the device looks for certain biomarkers, which are physiological changes within the body. The test takes three to five minutes.

If the light on the device turns red, the creators recommend further testing, like the traditional nasal swab test. If the light turns green, you are clear.

The creators are Harrison Wittels and Rick Whittington. Whittington lives in Holly Springs, N.C. They ask that during the test, you do not move or speak to achieve best results.

The creators have tested the device on more than 1,000 people. The initial testing groups for the COVID Plus Monitor included patients at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach, Florida, a university and a K-12 school.

"We really are interested in helping the school systems get back to work and get the kids back in school," Whittington said. "Because if we can help do that safely, we really believe we will be able to help mom and dad go to work."

It took the creators more than ten months to get an emergency use authorization from the FDA. But now that they have it, they hope to use the device to detect disease states like sepsis, tuberculosis and even cancer.

"If we can predict something at stage one, at the early stages of cancer... we can catch it earlier, and we can take preventive measures to then mitigate that risk and elongate that persons life," Whittington said.

The device is already being used at schools across the country. Whittington also hopes to see it used at stadiums, concerts venues and more.

Spectrum News 1 reporter, Victoria Wresilo sits patiently during COVID Plus Monitor test. Her results came back clear.
