ROCKFORD (WREX) —There's a new device inside Rockford ambulances.
"This is kind of an evolutionary change but more of a revolutionary change," says Rockford Fire EMS Training Coordinator Brian Park.
It's called a Tempus Pro. The device contains a defibrillator as well as other patient monitoring systems. The device pairs automatically and securely transmits vitals to doctors and nurses waiting for patients at local emergency departments.
"So they can have a live look at what our cardiac machine is doing whether that's on the side of the road of a crash or in someone's living room," says Park.
In previous models before the Tempus, the information would be printed or faxed, and paramedics would be forced to verbally relay everything to the ER.
"Our EMS crews in the field are doing a lot of things simultaneously," says OSF Saint Anthony Dr. Dan Butterbach. "So it can be very difficult for them to call and speak to what's going on and remember to get us all the information"
"So really when you're talking about situations where minutes can be lifesaving it really helps in that situation," says SwedishAmerican Doctor and Rockford Fire Medical Director Dr. Muhammad Shareef.
When the emergency is over, the Tempus becomes a training tool. It logs everything from how deep and fast chest compressions were to how well an airway was secured. This allows first responders to learn from their mistakes or successes.
"We can learn from and teach people on what we are doing well," says Shareef. "We can learn from and teach people on what we are doing well."
"We can look at those and look at those when we break down cardiac arrests and improve those processes in house, it's incredibly powerful," says Park. "Really at the end of the day we want to be making sure we take care of people the best way we can."
