Mystic Shores, a senior residential community of 340 homes located in Little Egg Harbor Township, is due for an electric grid update.
When the community was built 40 years ago, it was way ahead of its time in that all the electric service is underground. This leaves the streets clear of electric poles and wires, and the community has been free of outages due to falling tree limbs or storm-tossed transformers.
But now, in the older section of the community, making up about half of the homes, the wires and above-ground transformer boxes are due for replacement. Last year, there were four outages that affected a small number of homes.
At a community meeting with Atlantic City Electric on Monday, Bob Clark, construction manager for the Mystic Shores Reliability Project, said the company is dedicated to the least amount of disruption possible and will be turning off the electric service only between transformers, so the outage will affect only six or seven homes at a time. The outage will be for between six and eight hours only, and only in the daytime.
Every resident affected by a temporary outage will receive a notice on their door 48 hours beforehand so they can make plans to leave their homes or put on an extra sweater – whatever they need to do to remain comfortable. The clubhouse will be open for those who want a place to hang out during those times of disruption.
“We realize this is an inconvenience, but we are trying to be proactive. Better to know you’ll be without electric for a few hours than be subject to an outage in the middle of the night caused by a failure of old equipment,” Clark said.
Residents who need electricity for emergency purposes or health reasons (oxygen machines, etc.) should call the number for the project that came in a letter or call the community office before the work begins. The company will make arrangements for these people.
Residents in the newer section of the development may experience an outage when some wires running under Shenandoah Drive, the second main entrance to Mystic Shores, are replaced, so anyone in the newer sections with health concerns should also contact ACE.
Because of COVID and the unreliability of getting some supplies, especially the conduit pipes needed for the project, Clark said he could not give an exact date when the project would begin, but he hopes it will be done by the December holidays.
Only a street or a section of a street will be done at a time. The excavation will be done by underground direction boring, so there will not be continuous trenching. But each residence will see holes dug in the yard as workers need to locate the other utility lines on the properties: gas, water and sewer, plus cable for those who have it.
“It will be invasive. Although we are digging underground, everyone’s lawns will have a lot of holes,” Clark said. —P.J.
