A mob of villagers in Telangana’s Sangareddy district allegedly flogged a Dalit man to death early on Sunday for stealing electric cables.
Police said the incident took place in an agriculture field in Gummadidala village when a group of villagers reportedly caught M Mallesh, 30, stealing wires connected to borewells. While the list of suspects, based on the complaint, includes more than 20 people, officers are yet to arrest anyone for their role in the murder.
When contacted, the Station House Officer of Gummadidala police Ch Vijay Krishna said the investigation is underway and no arrests have been made yet as the police are verifying the identity of the suspects.
“We have registered an FIR invoking sections 342 ( wrongful confinement), 302 (murder), and section 3(2)(v) of the SC / ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against unknown persons based on a complaint from the victim’s wife M Meena,” he said.
According to the police, incidents of theft of electric cables and motor pumps had risen in the village in the last few months and besides complaining to the local police, farmers were on increased vigil at night.
At about 1 am on Sunday, they caught Mallesh and thrashed him. He was taken to the local Rythu Sangham office, tied to a pole and thrashed, police said, adding that he died at around 6 am.
Seeking action against the murderers of her husband, Meena said Mallesh should have been handed over to the police if he had stolen the material. She has alleged that her husband was brutally beaten up and electrocuted. The police are awaiting the post-mortem report.

According to the police, Mallesh was accused of stealing electric wires in the past too and had been booked. He used to sell copper wires from the electric cables for money.
