JOLIET, IL — Wednesday marked a historic event for the city of Joliet as Mayor Terry D'Arcy, interim city manager Rod Tonelli, city economic development director Cesar Suarez and several other downtown business leaders gathered in the Ottawa Street parking deck to unveil the first city-owned electric vehicle charging stations.
Joliet held a ribbon-cutting to mark the occasion on the second level of the city's Ottawa Street parking deck. Four more electric vehicle battery charging stations will be installed in the parking deck by the end of September and two more charging stations will be put in the city-owned parking lot, called the Barrett's lot, near Joliet and Van Buren Streets, near Harrah's Casino.
"It's a great day to activate our first set of EV chargers," Mayor D'Arcy remarked at Wednesday's ribbon cutting. "The city's new charging station downtown will be an immediate benefit to our residents, downtown workforce and those visiting our downtown for food, entertainment and excitement.
"There is a growing demand for charging stations, and we want to be ready for the emergence and growth of electric cars, trucks, buses and the like," D'Arcy declared,
According to Suarez, even though electric vehicle sales in the U.S. accounted for only about 4 percent of all vehicle sales in 2020, that number is projected to grow to 40 to 50 percent by 2030.
He noted that the number of electric vehicle registrations increased in Joliet from 25 to 222 between 2018 and 2021 and from 410 to 3,800 across Will County during that time frame.
Suarez pointed out that a citywide plan to build out a charging infrastructure might be possible for Joliet through a $7 million federal grant the city applied for in June. Joliet's proposed plan is to install up to seven level 3 charging stations near interchanges and have up to 17 level 2 charging stations near retail and entertainment centers over a five-year period, according to Suarez.
Level 3 charging stations would fully charge an electric vehicle in 30 to 45 minutes, while the level 2 charging units would take two-and-a-half to five hours.
