The Texas Department of Transportation approved a plan to expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the state.
The plan includes building a "border to border charging network for electric vehicles," the Texas Transportation Commission said.
Currently, there are about 215,000 electric vehicle drivers in Texas as of Aug. 15, data from the Texas Electric Transportation Resources Alliance said.

After Congress passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act in November 2021, over $400 million was awarded to TxDOT to help private companies place electric vehicle charging stations along Texas interstates and major highways.
In a letter to the department after the bill was passed, Gov. Greg Abbott advocated for a plan that would allow "Texans to easily get from Beaumont to El Paso and Texline to Brownsville in an electric vehicle."
Texas will also be the first state to adopt a requirement for charging stations to include the CCS standard as well as the North American Charging Standard. This type of charging plug will be used by most electric vehicles after 2025, according to TxDOT.
“Without a robust and visible charging network, many potential electric vehicle buyers are reluctant to drive long distances," said Tom “Smitty” Smith, director of TxETRA. "TxDOT’s action today will help future-proof the Texas transportation system.”
