These 10 electric cars can charge faster than any others on the market
- Hyundai and Kia make the fastest-charging electric cars on the market.
- Some cars can add over 800 miles of range in an hour, while others might be less than half that.
- Edmunds' test is one of the first to show head-to-head charging speed based on real-world data.
One of customers' biggest anxieties about electric vehicles is how long it'll take to get to a full charge.
And while it's relatively rare that a full charge overnight at home won't get you to where you're going, there are road trips when charging won't be nearly as fast as getting gas. And not all cars are created equal in that regard.
Charging speed can be affected by many factors, like the weather, battery temperature, crowding of the charging station, and internal settings designed to prevent you from charging too fast — which can damage the battery in the long run.
Still, there are chemical and engineering differences from car to car and battery to battery that affect charging speed, and are worth considering when making a purchase.
There isn't a standard industry measure for charging speed. So to test EVs head-to-head, the experts at Edmunds used data from the firm P3 that monitored electricity use while an EV was connected to a level-3 fast charger. The dataset also included power-request communication between the vehicle and charging station to track each battery's capacity.
Combined with Edmund's own data on electricity-per-mile on different vehicles, the results give one us one of our first looks at charging speeds across automakers and models.
Here's the list of top 10 fastest-charging EVs, as reported by Edmunds:
10. 2023 Tesla Model 3 Long Range
Edmunds tested miles per charging hour: 569
Tesla's massive network of Superchargers is a big sell for customers, and soon owners of many different cars will be able to plug in at them.
9. 2022 Porsche Taycan GTS
Edmunds tested miles per charging hour: 584
Porsche launched the Taycan sedan as its first electric moded in 2019 and has since introduced a handful of various trim levels.
8. 2023 Genesis Electrified G80
Edmunds tested miles per charging hour: 588
Business Insider hasn't tested the G80, but the Genesis GV60 also impressed our reviewer with super-fast charging (and other cool and quirky features like facial recognition.)
7. 2022 Mercedes Benz EQS 450+
Edmunds tested miles per charging hour: 592
Even with a range less than competitors like Lucid and Tesla, the Mercedes Benz EQS has plenty of range to get where you need to go, our reviewer found, and can recharge among the quickest of models out there.
6. 2022 Hyundai Ionic 5 dual motor
Edmunds tested miles per charging hour: 673
The Hyundai Ionic 5 was one of Business Insider's favorite cars last year, with "edgy, futuristic" looks that only complement its quick charging time.
5. 2022 Kia EV6 GT Line
Edmunds tested miles per charging hour: 678
The Kia EV6 is "the Ioniq 5's more fun-to-drive cousin," our reporter found last year. It's one of the most Tesla-looking Tesla alternatives out there.
4. 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S
Edmunds tested miles per charging hour: 690
Like other Taycans on the list, the Tacyan 4S blends sports-car speed with room for kids thanks to a lack of engine.
3. 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 Limited AWD (dual motor)
Edmunds tested miles per charging hour: 764
Hyundai followed up the Ioniq 5 with even more driving range and the same futuristic curves in the Ioniq 6.
2. 2022 Kia EV6 Wind RWD
Edmunds tested miles per charging hour: 769
The Kia EV6's cheaper, less-powerful sibling gets the second-most charge for your hour, Edmunds found.
1. 2023 Hyundai Ionic 6 Limited RWD (single motor)
Edmunds tested miles per charging hour: 868
In general, single-motor models did better in Edmunds' comparisons. The award-winning Ioniq 6 RWD topped the list with 868 miles of range added in an hour's charging.
