When HBO Max launches at the end of May, it will be available on a wide variety of devices and platforms. HBO is the latest major player to enter the streaming wars — an increasingly competitive market (especially during the coronavirus pandemic) that is dramatically changing the way audiences consume media. In keeping with the ever-changing nature of the industry, HBO Max is entering the market with ambitious offerings available on a variety of platforms, offering viewers convenience and flexibility.

The new streaming service is set to release in the United States on May 27, 2020. The international release of HBO Max is complicated due to rights issues; HBO Max is expected to arrive in Latin America in 2021, but the UK and Canada markets may never get the service — much like Hulu. However, for American audiences, accessing the new streaming service is as easy as signing up: in fact, subscribers can even preorder the service ahead of the launch via the website HBOmax.com.

HBO Max can be watched on various devices that have internet access, such as laptops or desktop computers. In addition to accessing HBO Max via the internet, audiences can watch the WarnerMedia streaming service using apps on various devices. According to AT&T CEO John Stankey, HBO has struck deals with most large distributors, and will be available on virtually every major platform at launch — with one notable exception.

Stankey addressed the devices HBO Max will launch on while speaking at an investor's conference in May, commenting that the app will be available for most devices, with the exception of Amazon Fire [via Bloomberg]. The streaming service will be available on the following platforms:

  • Android devices will have access to the HBO Max app; this includes Android TV devices, Chromebooks, Google Chromecast and Chromecast built-in devices.
  • Most Apple devices, such as iPads or iPhones, can run HBO Max. Apple TV 4th generation devices will also support the app, while older models won't; however, users can still stream HBO Max video on 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TV devices using AirPlay.
  • Sony's Playstation 4 systems can run the HBO Max app, which will be made available for download from the PlayStation Store.
  • Microsoft's Xbox One systems can download the HBO Max app from the Microsoft Store.
  • Some Samsung Smart TVs can run HBO Max directly from the website; however, only models released since 2016 will be able to do so.

HBO has also struck deals with a number of cable TV providers, which means that some customers may be able to access the service for free if the already subscribe to HBO channel or HBO Now; however, not every pay-TV provider has a deal with parent company AT&T. For those who aren't currently paying for HBO, the service will cost $15/month — with some options for a discounted rate. While the service is not free for all current HBO subscribers, and isn't available on Amazon Fire at launch, the current offering of programming — and viewing options — is sure to draw in audiences when the platform releases on May 27th.
