JACKSON, MI – An electrical outage, the cause of which is unknown, has closed down the Cascades facilities and Splash Pad for the foreseeable future at one of the hottest times of the summer.

The Splash Pad, a popular spot during the summer for kids to cool off during the heat of June, July and August is shut down because of the outages.

Kyle Lewis, deputy parks director for Jackson County, said in an email that the cause of the electric outage that will need immediate work is not known.

Temperatures are expected to get as high as 95 degrees in Jackson early next week, according to the National Weather Service.

Christopher Bolt, assistant county administrator and managing director of the Jackson County Department of Transportation said in an email that, “County of Jackson officials are continuing to diagnose the issue to better understand what is involved with repairs.”

“Most of the existing supply lines and supporting electrical components are original, nearing 100 years old. Unfortunately, this will not be a quick fix. We were hoping that a relatively simple supply line repair would solve the problem – and buy us some time before investing in a comprehensive replacement project. Sadly, it looks like we will be down for a while as we evaluate the details and get a project out to bid,” Bolt said in a statement.

Lewis said that the county is in the process of scheduling a meeting with engineers that can help diagnose what went wrong and caused the outage. The meeting is supposed to happen early next week, Lewis said.

“This was an unforeseen issue and we are hoping to welcome guests back to The Cascades as soon as possible,” he said.

It was unclear what the cost of that work will be at the time. The park itself remains open, though The Cascades facilities and the Splash Pad will remain closed.

The Cascades are located in the Sparks Foundation County Park at 1528 Kibby Road in Jackson and has been open since 1932 as a staple of the Jackson community.
