A nationwide heat wave is expected to reach Vermont on Friday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory for much of the Champlain Valley.

The service’s Burlington office forecasts heat index values in the mid-90s from noon to 8 p.m. in the western parts of Franklin, Chittenden and Addison counties. The high temperatures and humidity could lead to heat-related illnesses, the service has warned.

The heat wave has prompted some utilities in the state, including Vermont Electric Cooperative and the Burlington Electric Department, to encourage consumers to conserve electricity Friday afternoon and evening, starting at 5 p.m.

Higher temperatures typically boost the demand for electricity, which can drive up costs for utilities. Both have urged consumers to delay the use of major appliances, reduce air conditioning use in a safe manner, turn off non-essential lights and avoid other discretionary consumption during the peak alert.

“When VEC can reduce the cost to buy and transmit electricity during these ‘peak’ periods, it helps control future electricity rates for all co-op members,” Jake Brown, Vermont Electric Cooperative’s energy services planner, said in a written statement.

The member-owned utility supplies electricity to roughly 33,000 people in northern Vermont. It expects to end its peak alert at 9 p.m. The municipally owned and operated Burlington Electric Department plans to end its warning at 7 p.m.

Green Mountain Power, which provides power to 280,000 customers across the state, did not and does not issue peak alerts because of how its battery systems deploy energy, vice president for strategy and external relations Kristen Carlson said Friday morning. That allows its customers to make use of air conditioning and appliances while not putting further strain on New England’s power grid.
