Luxury car manufacturer Bentley is switching gears as it plans to retire its famed 12-cylinder gas-powered vehicles and focus on building hybrid and fully electric cars over the next ten years, the automaker announced on Thursday.

Bentley, which is owned by Germany’s Volkswagen, plans to switch its model range to offer only plug-in hybrid and electric cars by 2026. By 2030, the car maker plans to switch its entire lineup to fully electric vehicles with zero-carbon exhaust emissions.

“Driving this change includes, and also goes beyond our products, delivering a paradigm shift throughout our business, with credibility, authenticity, and integrity. Within a decade, Bentley will transform from a 100 year old luxury car company to a new, sustainable, wholly ethical role model for luxury,” Adrian Hallmark, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bentley Motors, said in a statement.

The Crewe, England-based company said it would launch two plug-in hybrids next year.

The company had previously announced that every model line will offer a hybrid version by 2023 and the first fully-electric model would be released in 2025. The shift to electric vehicles is part of the brand’s broader push to make its operations carbon-neutral by 2030.

Over the summer, Bentley announced it would cut up to 1,000 jobs, nearly a quarter of its workforce, as it moved towards an all electric lineup.

The move comes as several large automakers are shifting toward electric vehicles amid increasing pressure by governments and regulators to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions to curb climate change. Car companies are also hoping to become competitive with Tesla, which has dominated the electric vehicle market.

Just last month, GMC unveiled an all-electric Hummer pickup truck with a 350-mile range that is set to go into production in late 2021, possibly ahead of Tesla’s Cybertruck.
