Device Distribution for 2021-22 School Year

We can’t wait to welcome back students to five, full days of in-person instruction this fall. Starting September 1, we will kick off 180 Days of Excellence – the number of days in the 2021-22 school year.

To support our goal of providing high-quality instruction and creating the learning conditions for our students to thrive, we will be distributing devices for students during the first week of school.

Seattle Public Schools is a 1:1 device district, meaning that we will be providing each student with a grade appropriate iPad or laptop. Your student’s school will share more details on distribution before the start of school. When picking up a device, we are asking families to sign an agreement form and provide a $25 usage feeThe fee will be payable in School Pay beginning in mid-August. More information, approval forms, and set-up information will be posted on the district website by next week.

Device Distribution FAQ

What if my student did not return their device in the spring?

Our Department of Technology staff have prepared devices for students who returned them in the spring or summer. If students have not returned their devices, they should bring them back at the start of school and continue using them in the classroom. If they have issues with their devices, our technical support staff will be in the schools regularly to help. If a device is not usable, the school can provide another device and send their old device for repair. Replacement devices are limited, and because nearly 30% of families kept equipment over the summer, this cannot happen all at once, so we ask for your patience.

Will families and students have access to tech support?

Yes. School-based staff will support distribution and set-up of student devices during the first week of school and throughout the year. As we prepare for full-time, in-person learning, we have closed our tech support centers. Technology support staff are regularly at schools to provide technical support to staff and students. In addition, students and families can always reach out to our Student Techline for help.

Will there be a usage fee or fines?

When picking up a device, we are asking families to sign an agreement form and provide a $25 usage and repair fee. Families can use School Pay to pay the $25 fee. Schools will work with families unable to pay the fee on an individual basis.

In this coming school year, if a student loses their device, a fine will be applied at the rate of $250 for iPads or $350 for laptops. A stolen device with a police report will not incur a fine. Information will be posted online and provided by your school explaining any fees or potential fines. Schools will work with families unable to pay the fine on an individual basis.

My K-5 grade student is enrolled in the Virtual Option Pilot Program (VOPP). How will they receive their device?

K-5 grade students enrolled in VOPP will receive their devices prior to the start of school. VOPP staff will contact families directly about device pick up.
