Chevrolet has the Bolt EV and EUV and will soon add the Silverado EV, a Blazer EV, and an all-electric version of the Equinox. GMC has the Hummer EV and has promised a Sierra EV that will likely mirror the electric Silverado. Cadillac has the Lyriq luxury SUV. And Buick has…nothing yet.
That will change this summer. Buick this week teased its first electric vehicle for the U.S. market (it sells a rebadged Bolt in China). All we have for now is a headlight, but it suggests a few things.
The headlight roughly mirrors that of a concept car Buick showed off two years ago, called the Electra. That name, pulled from Buick’s history, is ideal for a future EV.
GM almost certainly won’t build that concept as a production car. It featured radical coach-style scissor doors that aren’t practical in the Buick price range. But its basic shape – a fastback straddling the line between crossover and wagon – would make a lovely update to Buick’s design language.
The concept rode on the Ultium battery platform that undergirds every GM EV except the Bolt. Buick said at the time that it used two electric motors for a through-the-road all-wheel-drive setup and made 583 horsepower. Remove the futuristic doors and a few other not-yet-practical features, and you’d have a very Lyriq-like crossover that could help revitalize a brand with a rather staid reputation in the United States.
Buick says it will reveal more details “this summer.”
