United Airlines is partnering with an electric aircraft company with plans to introduce an all-electric air taxi service from San Francisco International for commuters coming to and from the airport starting in 2026.
The Florida-based company, Eve Air Mobility, made the announcement Wednesday that both companies will be working with local and state officials, infrastructure, energy and technology providers to ensure the appropriate infrastructure is in place to introduce electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft flights.
Additionally, the companies are also working together to identify origin and destination areas and a future route network for the project.
“Our shared goal is to provide residents and visitors to the San Francisco Bay Area with efficient and cost-competitive transportation in one of the most densely populated urban areas in the U.S.,” said Andre Stein, co-CEO of Eve Air Mobility. “The Bay Area is perfect for eVTOL flights given its size, traffic, focus on sustainability, innovation and commitment to add other options for mobility.”
Last year, United Airlines announced a $15 million investment in Eve Air Mobility and a conditional purchase agreement for 200 electric aircraft, plus options for 200 more — a strategy to invest in innovative technologies as the airline stakes out its position as a leader in investing in aviation sustainability.
According to Eve, the new electric aircraft will aim to provide United’s customers with a quick, economical and lower-carbon way to get to its hub airports and commute in dense urban environments, as compared with conventional air taxis and other forms of traditional public transportation.
Wednesday’s announcement comes just two months after United announced a partnership with Santa Clara-based company Archer Airlines for the first air taxi route in Chicago, between O’Hare International Airport and Vertiport Chicago. That service is to begin in 2025.
