By Shilpa Nair: Street lights went off outside Chennai airport when Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived on Saturday evening as several parts of the city were hit by power outages. BJP workers staged protests demanding an investigation into the issue and claimed that this was a security lapse.
Responding to the allegations, DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan stated that the power cut was not intentional. The DMK leader said that the BJP is playing politics over the power outage issue.

"For a month, power consumption is much more than normal on days because of the heat. Sometimes it (power cuts) happens and it's not intentional. The BJP might even give this case to CBI. They are playing politics with this issue", Elangovan said as quoted by news agency ANI.

According to electricity board sources, the cause for the power disruption was due to a high-tension (230KV) supply line being disconnected from the grid. The power outage was not only in the airport area but also at Porur, St Thomas Mount, Poonamallee and the surrounding regions, said the sources in the electricity department.
"The power disruption was reported from 9.30 pm to 10.12 pm on Saturday evening in Chennai. The electricity board has used alternate sources to restore power in these areas. The power line rectification work is still underway," said the EB sources.
Meanwhile, there were widespread protests staged by the BJP cadres raising slogans against the DMK government and the Tamil Nadu Minister for Energy Department Senthil Balaji.
“This has to be investigated. How can there be a sudden power failure when our leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah reaches Chennai airport? This is a security lapse. This should be seriously investigated,” Tamil Nadu BJP state Vice President Karu Nagarajan told news agency ANI.
Home minister Amit Shah landed in Chennai as part of his two-day visit to Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. He arrived in Chennai at 9.20 PM on Saturday evening. He is slated to address a public meeting in Pallikonda near Vellore on Sunday afternoon before leaving for Andhra Pradesh.
