PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – Florida Power & Light customers could see a rate decrease beginning July 1.

According to the largest power utility in Florida, the latest decrease comes due to lower natural gas prices.

The company said another rate reduction had taken effect in May.

According to FP&L, the reduction, starting July 1, could have a typical 1,000 kilowatt-hour residential bill clock in at more than $8 lower in July than it was in April.

The company cautions, however, that bills could increase because of higher air conditioning use in Florida’s hot summer months, especially with the latest heat wave.

There are ways to further reduce your electric bill, according to FP&L.

  • Limit the time you run your pool pump: Summer - six hours a day Winter - four hours a day
  • Cool your home at 78° F or higher with the thermostat fan switched to auto. For additional savings, raise your thermostat to 82° F or higher when you’re away.
  • Heat your home at 68° F or lower with the thermostat fan switched to auto. To save even more, lower your thermostat to 65° F or lower at night or when you’re away from home.
  • Lower the temperature on your water heater. The average household spends about $15-20 per month to heat water. Lowering the temperature by 10° could save from 3 to 5% of your energy costs.
  • Clean or replace the A/C filter regularly to help your unit run more efficiently and trim cooling costs.
  • Turn off your ceiling fan when you leave the room. A fan that runs all the time costs up to $7 a month.
  • Replace old, high-flow showerheads with water-efficient showerheads and save up to $80* a year.
  • Adjust the water level on your washing machine to match the load size, and use a cold rinse whenever possible.
  • Clean the lint filter in your dryer before every load to dry your clothes faster.
  • Use the auto sensor function on your dryer to conserve energy by not over-drying your clothes.
