The Winter Park Town Council approved Resolution 2112 at its Jan. 16 regular meeting to authorize the purchase of an electric bus from the Washington State Transit System for $1,132,521.

At Winter Park Town Council’s Jan. 2 regular meeting, the council approved Resolution 2107 to amend a Colorado Department of Transportation FASTER grant for $811,240 to purchase one electric bus rather than two diesel buses.

Winter Park plans to use the FASTER grant to purchase the electric bus.

“This is the town’s first electric bus, so let’s get hyped,” said Winter Park Transit Manager Charles McCarthy.

McCarthy explained the timeline for the delivery of the bus is about two years, given supply chain issues.

Last year, several electric bus manufacturers left the industry or the country, according to McCarthy. Municipalities have fewer manufacturers to choose from and those companies still producing electric buses have much higher demand. They’re struggling to keep up, but McCarthy is hopeful electric bus manufacturers will be able to ramp up production soon.

Special Events

The Winter Park Town Council granted three special event permits at their Jan. 16 regular meeting.

The Wells Fargo Cup , a ski race and fundraiser for the National Sports Center for the Disabled, Winter Wonderland , a new over-the-snow 5K with kids activities along the way, and The Lodge – A Paramount+ Experience, which is a new TV tent event at the base of Winter Park Resort, all received permits.

The Wells Fargo Cup is an annual event; this season will be the 48th rendition. Four races will take place Feb. 22-24. On Thursday, the first day of the event, professional disabled athletes from around the world will race in the World Disabled Invitational.

Architects, engineers and contractors square off in the AEC Challenge Thursday afternoon. Friday is the Corporate Challenge, where NSCD athletes compete with corporate teams for cash prizes to fund their paralympic training efforts.

The NSCD Special Olympics team takes on the professional course in the Kid’s Snowplow Sprint later on Friday.

On Feb. 3 at 1 p.m., the Winter Wonderland over-the-snow 5K begins at the A-Frame club in Old Town Winter Park.

The course, which features kids activities along the way follows the Fraser River Trail into downtown Winter Park at the Rendezvous Event Center. Proceeds benefit the Grand Kids Learning Center .

As a part of Alterra’s partnership with Paramount+, a TV streaming service, The Lodge – A Paramount+ Experience, comes to the base of Gemini Lift at Winter Park Resort Feb. 1-4.

The event “features themed rooms, specialty bars, collectible items, and a DJ,” according to the special event permit application.

Other business:

  • In his update, Winter Park Town Manager Keith Reisberg said the town plans to pursue meetings with the Grand County Board of County Commissioners and the Colorado Department of Transportation about communication on road closures following the four-day closure of Berthoud Pass.
