NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Electric bills in Tennessee have increased drastically thanks to the brutally cold temperatures from last week’s winter storm. Chris Jones, the CEO of Middle Tennessee Electric, explained that energy costs don’t rise, but consumption does.

If you use an electric heat pump, your bill will be higher because they use emergency heat almost the whole time temperatures are below freezing.

Electric bills including electricity usage for your home or business from the storm are coming out now through February for most local electric companies. If you are having trouble paying your bill, Jones says to call MTE and they will help their members the best they can.

One of the options is leveling your bill. You can do this at any time with MTE and it will regulate the cost of your bill over 12 months, giving you an average each month. This makes it easier to budget for your bill because you know what it will be each time you get it.
