Make way for the Porsche Taycan, the latest version of the German automaker's first electric sports car.
Announced this week, the "standard" Taycan comes with the simple name "Taycan" as opposed to the 4S or the Turbo S. It will come out later this year in the U.S. as the most basic option of the electric Taycan lineup. It will also be the cheapest mode, starting at $79,900. That's finally close to the Tesla Model S, which starts at around $70,000.
Previously the Taycan 4S was the "budget" Taycan with a starting price of more than $103,000. The Taycan Turbo and Turbo S cost $150,000 and $185,000 respectively.
The newest Taycan is 200 pounds lighter than its "fancier" predecessors and comes with a standard battery with 79.2 kWh capacity and a rear motor. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds with a top speed of 143 mph.
Previous Taycan models have a battery range of about 200 miles, but the estimated range for this new standard Taycan hasn't been announced yet. A higher performance battery configuration will be available to add to the new Taycan for $5,780.
From the outside, the Taycan looks pretty similar to the older models — it's a just a smidge taller. It's due to hit the streets sometime in the spring but you can preorder it online now.
