Avid boat racers and electricians Mongeon and Vision Marine began working on more powerful yet efficient electric outboard motors in 2015.
They created the E-Motion 180, the first electric boat engine to use lithium batteries.
The electric outboard motor boasts 180 horsepower and is the first electric boat to reach speeds of 60mph. The E-motion 180 costs about $ 5,000 more than a standard internal combustion engine and can be used on all boats that use a 180 HP outboard gas engine (typically 18-26 feet).
The engine can be fully charged overnight and all you need is a 220 volt outlet (plug and play boat version). Due to the small number of moving parts, maintenance is much less than with an ICE engine.
Electric engines are silent, odorless, and smokeless, so you no longer yell at each other or leave a layer of smoke in the wake.
The E-Motion 180 will go on sale in May and will be delivered later this year.
Randy Truthdale, Chief Operating Officer of SBX Marine, a Florida-based custom boat builder and brokerage firm, said:
“If you look at some of the electric motors, you might say they’re worth 50-70 horsepower, but no one is doing what the new 180 is doing.”
According to Vision Marine, electric boats are accepted by celebrities such as Drake, Robert De Niro and Grete Thamberg. Many tour operators are looking to electric boats, and there are also cities for rental and water taxis.
Many areas are designated as marine protected areas (26% in the United States, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), and motorboats are banned. Many allow electric boats because they are cleaner and quieter.
“The only sounds you can hear are the water hitting the hull and the sounds people are enjoying,” said Monjeong.
And more and more people are having fun on the water during the pandemic.
According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, powerboat sales in 2020 increased by 12%, recording over 310,000 new sales. This is the highest number since before the recession in 2008.
The number of boat rental companies is also skyrocketing, including a 700% year-on-year growth of GetMyBoat, the world’s largest boat rental company.
