WEX Inc. (NYSE: WEX), a global financial technology service provider based in Portland, has expanded its partnership with ChargePoint, of Campbell, Calif., to better integrate electric vehicles into corporate fleets.
Under an agreement announced last week, the companies aim to offer a robust end-to-end solution to help so-called mixed fleets of electric and internal combustion vehicles incorporate a combination of charging solutions on the road, at a depot or at home.
Another goal is to streamline program enrollment, centralized reporting and billing and real-time energy-use data to support driver reimbursement for commercial electric charging and installation services.
The news comes as established automakers including Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co. invest heavily in battery and electric car plants and President Joe Biden pushes for a shift to electric vehicles over the next decade.
Building on a 2019 agreement, WEX and ChargePoint said they expect to offer at-work and fleet depot charging solutions for customers looking to install on-site charging stations at workplace facilities and integrate them into their fleet operations, as well as private site charging solutions.
“By expanding WEX’s relationship with ChargePoint, we expect to position both companies to serve our customers’ full range of needs over the long-term, as more businesses evolve their fleets in efforts to address climate change,” said Scott Phillips, president of global fleet at WEX. "WEX believes that partnering with ChargePoint will enable WEX to fully support any mix of EV and ICE [internal combustion engine] vehicles that our customers operate.”
Rich Mohr, global Vice President of ChargePoint, called the latest agreement a major step in helping fleets prepare for the future of electric mobility, adding: “The enhanced end-to-end e-mobility solutions from on-route, depot and at-home easily support drivers when they need a charge in North America and Europe.”
The companies said their growing relationship will allow drivers to locate and activate EV charging stations and authorize payments while providing fleet managers with consolidated billing and reporting and greater visibility into internal combustion engine and electric vehicle usage.
"Integrating this data is critical for mixed fleet customers as they continue to look for opportunities to further reduce their carbon footprints and to simplify their complex reporting needs," they said in their announcement.
ChargePoint, found in 2007, has a network of 92 million electric vehicle charging stations in North America and Europe serving 5,000 customers, including more than three-quarters of the Fortune 50 companies.
In Portland, ChargePoint has charging stations at City Hall, 72 Chestnut St. and at Hobsons Landing on Commercial St., according to an online directory.
