DULUTH, MN-- Working from home has become the new normal, but what isn't normal is the increase in people's electric bill.

Lake Country Power officials say on average their members use 700 kilowatt hours of electricity a month.

Since the start of the pandemic in March, those numbers have gone up.

Tami Zaun Lake Country's Public Relations Coordinator said,"It really boils down to being mindful about what you're using in the home.

With more people being home Lake Country Power officials said there are simple things you can do to prevent an increase in your electric bill.

Zaun said, "I'm working from home right now and everything is off in the house, lights wise, except here in my work space."

Making small changes, like changing your light bulbs from incandescent to LED can make a big difference.

"They do use a lot less electricity and they last so much longer," Zaun adds.

Meanwhile, washing your clothes using cold or warm water instead of hot uses less electricity.

But make sure you're putting in a full load.

Zaun said, "A lot of people are famous of oh, my jeans need to be washed, I'll just throw those in really quick. Well, let's add some more into the load."

When working or doing school work from home Zaun adds it's best to use a power strip for your electronics.

She said, "To plug in your printers, your computers, cable boxes, TV's. And then it's just one little click of a button to shut it all off when you're done using it."

As for keeping track of how much electricity you're using there's an app for that.

Apps like Smart Hub can help keep you in the know so you can keep your electrical costs down.
