Protecting the nation’s electric power supply should be a bipartisan effort | PennLive letters - pennlive.com

The safety and resiliency of our electric power supply is a major concern to those responsible for our national security. We are dependent upon readily available, inexpensive electricity to run our homes and businesses. We need to ensure that power derived from minimally polluting sources is there when we need it.

H.R. 2986 (also termed the BEST Act) is a piece of legislation in the U.S. House that would move us along the pathway to grid security. (There's a companion bill in the U.S. Senate, S. 1602.) And it has bipartisan support. House co-sponsors include Reps. Fitzpatrick (R, PA-1), Doyle (D, PA-18), Houlahan (D, PA-6, and Meuser (R, PA-9).

The measure would fund development and deployment of grid-scale electricity storage -- that is, batteries capable of storing enough electricity to sustain users for days-to-weeks, perhaps longer. We’d be protected from outages caused by natural disasters, foreign attack, or unexpected excessive demand. Importantly, the increased energy storage would be independent of the energy source -- whether derived from natural gas, hydroelectric, wind and solar, or nuclear.

We should urge our Members of Congress -- including PA-10's Rep. Scott Perry -- to get behind this measure. It's a bipartisan approach we could all use.
