Alabamians are spending a lot on electricity, according to a recent survey, despite the fact that the price they pay is about average with the rest of the country.
WalletHub is out with a survey of the most and least expensive energy states for 2023.
The analysis took into account the average monthly consumption, and prices, of electricity, natural gas, home heating oil and gasoline.
According to WalletHub, Alabamians spend more on electricity monthly than any other state, at an average of $174, followed by Connecticut and South Carolina.
The state set this mark despite placing 28th in total energy spending, and 23rd in electricity price, according to a WalletHub spokesperson.
The state didn’t even crack the top five in terms of electricity price. Hawaii leads the pack there.
So why the high finish?
It’s because Alabama placed third behind Louisiana and Mississippi in terms of energy consumption, and just ahead of Arkansas and Tennessee. If you’re wondering why, perhaps you haven’t been outside in a few weeks.
And how is 2023 stacking up in electricity consumption?
Anthony Cook, a spokesman for Alabama Power, said its residential customers consumed 15% less electricity in the first quarter of 2023, compared to the first quarter of 2022.
“This is likely due to the mild winter weather and the comfortable temperatures we enjoyed well into June,” he said.
“Increased electric demand is anticipated with the recent heat wave, but that is to be expected in periods of extreme temperatures.”
According to TVA, Friday, the June 30 peak was 28,911 megawatts at 5 p.m. at 91 degrees, which is the highest peak this year and the peak for the summer so far.
That’s lower than 31,600 megawatts mark set in June 2022.
According to TVA, its residential rates are around 70% lower than in other parts of the country.
Alabama showed up on both ends of the spectrum when it comes to gasoline consumption.
The state finished 48th in price, just ahead of Louisiana and Mississippi.
But, at the same time, Alabama drivers consumed the third largest amount of gasoline, behind Wyoming and Mississippi.
As of Friday, according to AAA, the average price of a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline was $3.08 in Alabama, below the national average of $3.53.
Alabama also finished 47th in home heating oil consumption, a category led by western and New England states.
Cook said Alabama Power customers can soften those electricity spikes by signing up for budget billing, which averages out monthly bills over a year’s worth of service.
Customers can also manage their usage by signing up for usage alerts and taking advantage of energy savings tips.
