A bad veto

DeSantis vetoes bill that made it easier for state agencies to buy electric cars | July 8

Yes, we should be concerned about Gov. Ron DeSantis’ veto of bipartisan legislation to seriously look at the long-term savings to the state through the purchase of electric vehicles. But how much more should we be concerned if the lawmakers who overwhelmingly voted in favor of the bill fail to override this veto?

Mandatory test

US citizenship test changes raise concerns for some immigrants | July 6

The article on the difficulty of the U.S. citizenship and immigration test made me wish candidates for public office were required to pass a 100-question civics test before being allowed to run.

Cluster munitions

Biden defends US sending controversial weapons to Ukraine | July 7

In 1944, U.S. newspapers were filled with stories of the D-Day invasion and the campaign in the Mariana Islands. Gen. Ira Eaker of the Army Air Forces, who had helped build the Eighth Air Force that made D-Day possible, was in the Soviet Union trying to establish air bases for “shuttle bombing” missions over Germany. This futile effort only lasted about three weeks, but during that time the Luftwaffe dropped cluster bombs on and around the airfields. When Eaker suggested that they get some bulldozers to go out and clear the munitions, his Soviet host is reported to have said something like: “Oh, no need for that. We just send the peasants out into the fields and eventually all the bombs explode.”

Russia has been using cluster munitions since the beginning of the current war with Ukraine, a war that Russia initiated. Given that this is two regimes fighting for survival, we should put aside the notion that war has rules and decide, instead, which regime’s survival we would prefer. When it comes to weapons deployed, it is not like the U.S. has an unblemished history.

The noble mission of the English major and the public writer | Column, July 9

Columnist Roy Peter Clark correctly recognizes that capability in written English expression will help us to better understand facts and create policies for our mutual benefit. What he does not address is the portion of the population for which these are not virtues.

Demonizing DeSantis

Why doesn’t Gov. DeSantis want a trial with Disney until 2025? | Editorial, July 9

Your paper is so anti-Ron DeSantis. So it’s little surprise that your editorial on DeSantis and Disney is overstated in favor of Disney. DeSantis is conservative. So what? Every elected official is either red, blue or somewhere in between. It’s unfortunate that so much of the media believes that only liberals have a voice.

Glorified torture

Running of the bulls | July 9

As is your custom every year, the Tampa Bay Times covers Spain’s running of the bulls as a daredevil yet fun event, usually with a passing mention of the bulls’ ultimate fate — to be killed in the bullfighting ring.

In that ring, bulls are taunted by the “bullfighter,” who continuously stabs the poor creature with decorated arrows. The bull continues to be tortured in this way until he is exhausted and unable to defend himself. He is then stabbed repeatedly once down, until finally succumbing to his wounds and blood loss.

Some Spaniards consider this a sport. Much of the rest of the world considers it animal abuse to the extreme. I challenge anyone who disagrees to watch one.

I hope this newspaper will keep this in mind and never again cover anything related to bulls as “sport” in Spain unless it’s to report that such cruelty has at last ended.

Daniel Ruth endorsement

The pandering isn’t working for DeSantis. Here’s a different strategy | Column, July 9

Attention, Daniel Ruth: Your Sunday column has convinced me to throw my hat in the ring, and I am seeking your endorsement. Not only can I find Ukraine on a map, but my incredible wife and I have been to Ukraine. Yeehaw Junction is a regular stop on our way to Port St. Lucie. The downside might be nobody has heard of me, and I am still trying to get indicted for something — anything, actually. But I am intimately familiar with sky high homeowners insurance, and my Ph.D. in public policy may assist the quest for solutions. A vote for Dr. T is a vote for me!
